    The aim of this article is to analyze how Alberto Maranhão constructed a narrative and a rationality around the ethnic issue of the norte-rio-grandense, considering his reflection from a broader national debate about the racial constitution of the Brazilian people. For this, we will only analyze Part I of the Ensaio Histórico, published in 1898, by the Revista do Rio Grande do Norte, dedicated exclusively to the problem of the ethnic formation of Rio Grande do Norte. We will also examine the conditions of possibility of the essay, as well as the interfaces of the text of Alberto Maranhão with the thinking of other men of letters of nineteenth-century Brazil. For this, we will first address the intellectual formation of the author. Next, we will address your action in the intellectual field of Rio Grande do Norte, more specifically in Natal. Finally, we will discuss the issue of race in Alberto Maranhão's essay and how this dialogue with Brazilian social thought of the nineteenth century.

    O objetivo do presente artigo é analisar de que maneira Alberto Maranhão construiu uma narrativa e uma racionalidade em torno da questão étnica do norte-rio-grandense, considerando sua reflexão a partir de um debate nacional mais amplo acerca da constituição racial do povo brasileiro. Para isso, analisaremos, somente, a parte I do Ensaio Histórico, dedicada exclusivamente ao problema da formação étnica do norte-rio-grandense.
