    Lucius Iunius Brutus: ancient characters of the founder of the Roman Republic. This paper intends to investigate the nature of the character of Lucius Junius Brutus in the most ancient phases of the tradition, conducting research through internal comparisons within the Roman tradition pertaining to the regal period, to identify significant similarities and oppositions. It will not be a question of verifying the historicity or historical inconsistency of the character, but of studying its tradition. It turns out that Brutus was considered supremely perspicacious in understanding the will of the gods, and, in the confrontation between Tarquin and Brutus, the latter got the better thanks to his talents for divination and rituals, and for this reason he became the first consul. If it were true that Tarquinius Superbus was expelled by Porsenna, instead of Brutus, as is often suspected, then we should think that the tradition of Brutus as an interpret of the gods is the one that was imposed more recently in Rome to justify the end of monarchy and the choice of the first consul, regardless of the military and political successes of Porsenna

    Questo articolo vorrebbe indagare la natura del personaggio di Lucio Giunio Bruto nelle fasi più antiche della tradizione, conducendo la ricerca attraverso confronti interni alla tradizione romana sull’epoca monarchica, al fine di individuare somiglianze ed opposizioni significative. Non si tratterà di verificare la storicità o l’inconsistenza storica di Bruto il Vecchio, ma di studiarne la tradizione. Ne risulta che Bruto era ritenuto sommamente perspicace nell’intendere il volere degli dei, e dal confronto fra Tarquinio e Bruto quest’ultimo ebbe la meglio grazie alle sue doti mantiche e rituali, e per questo divenne il primo console. Se poi fosse vero che Tarquinio il Superbo fu cacciato da Porsenna, invece che da Bruto, come spesso si è sospettato, allora dovremmo pensare che la tradizione su Bruto interprete degli dei è quella che più anticamente si è imposta a Roma per giustificare la fine della monarchia e la scelta del primo console, indipendentemente dai successi militari e politici di Porsenna
