An effective study behavior is an objective aimed even by students of higher education, since they also present difficulties in performing some basic academic activities, such as interpretative reading and production of academic texts. According to a behavioral approach, questions related to the effectiveness of study practices are discussed in terms of the contingencies involved in study behavior. To apply this principle to study means to understand it through the interrelationship between the action of studying, the occasion in which it occurs, and the consequences it produces. From this point of view, the effectiveness of study practices should also be understood in the context of this interrelationship. This empirical-exploratory research had the objective of investigating the effectiveness of the study practices of undergraduate students. A total of 647 students of Human Sciences courses at a public university in Paraná State participated in the research. The data were obtained through an electronic questionnaire with 29 questions based on the concept of triple contingency. Although the answers indicate a frequent behavior of studying (5 days per week), a majority of the participants (70.5%) said do not have a study routine. For a considerable part of the participants (45.5%), the study behavior still seems to be under control of aversive situations, such as tests and works. In general, the participants study alone, but many of them use technological resources like internet and online social networks (this contributes to the occurrence of incompatible behaviors with studying). In addition, 62.5% of the students answered that they were dissatisfied with their study practices. These results show that the average research participant does not have an effective study behavior. Understanding the study in terms of contingencies can guide educational strategies that create an effective repertoire of studying, moving away from the common practice of blaming the student for school failure, ignoring contextual variables.
