Resumen: El artículo reflexiona sobre los procesos de constitución y cambio de las obras pastorales de la Iglesia católica que atienden a migrantes en México, cuando asumen la misión evangélica de llevarles el mensaje de caridad, justicia y acogida. Inician su trabajo proveyendo ayuda humanitaria, pero pronto se ven compelidas a responder a los retos que les plantea el incremento de la violencia contra personas migrantes, ampliando el espectro de sus servicios y avanzando en su compromiso con la defensa de derechos humanos. Los principios y valores de la Doctrina Social de la Iglesia (DSI) son el fundamento de sus decisiones y de su quehacer, y también les plantean dilemas y desafíos. El texto se nutre de la revisión de literatura sobre organizaciones de sociedad civil y de documentos de la DSI, y se complementa con la observación participante de larga data de la autora.

Abstract: This article presents reflections on the processes of the formation and modification of the Catholic pastoral services that attend to migrants in Mexico when church workers take on the evangelical mission of delivering them a message of charity, justice and welcome. These workers begin their labors by providing humanitarian aid, but soon find themselves compelled to respond to the challenges that arise from the increasing violence directed against migrants. In response to these challenges, they broaden the spectrum of services they provide and intensify their commitment to defend their human rights. The principles and values of the Social Doctrine of the Church (SDC) form the foundation of their decisions and activities, but also entail dilemmas and challenges. This article draws from a review of the literature on civil society organizations and documents pertaining to the SDC, complemented by the author’s own long-term experiences of participant observation.
