This article focuses on the role of regional identity in the socio-environmental transformations present on the two main contemporary frontiers of the Brazilian Amazon located respectively along the major logistic axes of the BR-230/BR-163 highways in western Pará state and the BR-230/BR-319 highways in southern Amazonas state. These transformations are contrasted to those present in riverine areas located beyond the frontier which are more typical of historic preserved Amazonia.
The expanding frontier is shown to have attracted a diversity of settlers from all of over Brazil who bring very different cultural backgrounds to the region, practice different kinds of agriculture, possess opposing environmental ethics and develop modes of communitarian life with specific environmental and social impacts.
