    • LC. 10:18, a verse as attractive as it is enigmatic, is the subject of this article. In the first part, traces of the theme of the fall of Satan are sought in the demonological literature produced by Jewish and Jewish-Christian apocalyptic and rabbinic writings. A detailed analysis, text by text, yields some preliminary results, according to which the theme appears often in an eschatological context. Not only Qumrin and Rev. but also 2Enoc 29:4-5, Life of Adam 14-16, and BR major 5:5 are closely linked to our purpose. These three texts refer Is. 14:12 explicitly to the fall-expulsion of Satan (and not to the king of Babylon) from heaven. In the second part, departing from these findings, the lsaian text is studied from the perspectives of the contents, and of the literary expression. The analysis of the Hebrew text, the Septuagint and the Targum, makes one realise -in spite of obvious reservations- that elements of Luke 10:18 refer back exactly to Is. 14:12, through the re-interpretative readings of the Greek and Aramaic versions of Isaiah. In the third part, the words of Luke 10:18 are dealt with one by one, in order to show the Jesuan originality of this logion, which exhibits the particular apocalyptic traits. However, those traits, in the mouth of Jesus, seem to be mediations that point to the transmission of a message related intima- tely to the nucleus of his preaching: the Kingdom of God is here, the eschaton has already irrupted. Consequently, although it cannot be definitely demonstrated that Is. 14:12 lies behind Lk. 10:18, the tipo- logy of the fall of the oppressor (Satan, the tyrantl in the eschatological framework and the translation of the expressions (especially 'to fall/to be dragged') seem to indicate it.
