Beneficios más allá de la profesión: inversiones económicas y negocios de la oficialidad naval a lo largo del siglo XIX

    A pesar de la decadencia inicial y vaivenes que vivió la Armada española durante el siglo XIX, la oficialidad naval fue un grupo social y profesional que tuvo una relevante posición y un reconocido prestigio. Debido a su movilidad alrededor del imperio y su posición en la estructura social, estos individuos se situaron en la intersección de numerosas redes políticas, económicas y culturales, lo cual les permitió acceder con mayor facilidad a diversos campos de inversión y beneficio económico. El objetivo de este trabajo es indagar y conocer cuáles fueron los negocios que estos oficiales tuvieron y emprendieron a lo largo del ochocientos, es decir, se pretende examinar cómo una parte de la oficialidad naval participó en la economía del ochocientos y cómo estos individuos gestionaron sus capitales más allá del hecho de ser asalariados del Estado. Teniendo como preguntas clave dónde invirtieron, cómo lo hicieron, en qué términos y qué riesgos asumieron, el trabajo concluye que un grupo de la oficialidad fue partícipe del desmantelamiento del comercio colonial indiano y que durante la segunda mitad del siglo numerosos oficiales invirtieron en sectores económicos muy diversos del incipiente capitalismo.

    Despite the initial decline and the swinging that the Spanish Navy experienced during the nineteenth century, the Spanish naval officers formed a social and professional group that had a relevant position and recognized prestige. Due to the mobility that they had around the empire, these individuals were placed at the intersection of a large number of political, social, economic and cultural networks, which facilitated them to access the fields of investment and economic benefit. The objective of this present work is to find out the investments and businesses that these officers had throughout this century, i.e., apparently a part of the naval officers participated in the economy of the nineteenth century and this article focuses on how they managed their capital beyond the fact of being employees of the State. By having as key questions where did they invest, how did they carry out and what risk did they assume, the work concludes that a group of the naval officers was involved in the dismantling of the old colonial trade and that during the second half of the century many officers invested in very different economic sectors of the incipient capitalism.
