    A pesquisa do imaginário procedente das imagens sacras barrocas representa um dos atributos necessários para o entendimento do patrimônio cultural em seu sentido simbólico. Durante o século XVIII, na América Portuguesa, a igreja era um espaço de convivência social e religiosa. A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar a iconografia e os elementos iconológicos das esculturas da Paixão de Cristo dos retábulos da igreja da Ordem Terceira de Nossa Senhora do Carmo de Ouro Preto em Minas Gerais (Brasil). A metodologia consiste na análise iconográficaiconológica dos retábulos e das imagens de devoção desta igreja, em interface com o debate bibliográfico nas áreas de história e arte, somada a pesquisa in situ e documental. Conclui-se que as ordens terceiras foram as grandes dissipadoras do mecenato artístico durante o setecentos na ornamentação de suas igrejas e nas organização das festas religiosas representando fator de identidade e tradição.

    The survey of Baroque sacred images is necessary in order to understand the symbolic element of cultural heritage. During the 18th century, in Portuguese America the Church was a place of social and religious coexistence. This study aims to analyze the iconography and the iconological elements of the sculptures of the Passion of Christ altarpieces of the Third Order of Carmen of Ouro Preto in Minas Gerais (Brazil). The methodology consists of an iconographic-iconological analysis of these altarpieces and images in face of bibliographic debates in the fields of history and art, coupled with in situ and documentary research. We conclude that the third orders were agencies for the wide dissemination of artistic patronage during the 1700s, representing identity and tradition.
