This paper analyzes the relationship between the painter Bartolome Esteban Murillo and the Sevillian aristocracy of his time, focusing particularly on the friendship that linked him to don Juan de Saavedra, Marquis of Moscoso. This connection between the nobleman and the painter resulted in the portrait that Murillo executed of don Juan in 1650. Our study considers different factors: shared friendships, spaces, institutions, and taste for art. Lastly, we take a journey through the history of the portrait, from the 17th century to the present.
