Should we welcome all developments in gene editing? Somatic cell gene editing would be on a par with conventional therapies ai- med at treating particular conditions or alleviating symptoms. It would solely affect the individual patient treated. It could thus ser- ve as a welcome new kind of treatment for cancers and blood di- seases such as ß-thalassaemia. Germ-line gene editing, on the other hand, would have hereditary effects. This raises special concerns about medical mishaps. Medical risks are, however, not the only kinds of risks in the case of germline gene editing. Dis- cussed here are not the medical risks, but the social and moral risks of germ-line-gene editing.
