    I numerosi manoscritti inediti di Iakovos Zarraftis, erudito locale di Cos, custoditi negli archivi della Faculty of Classics dell’Università di Cambridge, sono un’autentica miniera d’oro per chiunque studi la cultura popolare del Dodecaneso all’inizio del secolo scorso. In questo articolo sono pubblicate per la prima volta le note di Zarraftis relative ai vari spiriti ed esseri soprannaturali temuti dagli abitanti di Cos e Lero, in particolare diavoli, Nereidi, vrykolakes, geloudes, incubi, il kalostratis, callicanzari, Moire, streghe e spiriti guardiani di tesori.

    The many unpublished papers by the Coan writer and folklorist Iakovos Zarraftis, kept in the archives of the Faculty of Classics of the University of Cambridge, are a real treasure-trove for anyone studying the popular culture of the Dodecanese at the beginning of the last century. In this article are published for the first time Zarraftis’ notes about the many spirits and supernatural beings feared by the inhabitants of Cos and Leros, and in particular devils, Nereids, vrykolakes, geloudes, nightmares, kalostratis, kallikantzaroi, Moires, witches and spirits guarding treasures.
