In the early eighteenth century, the instruments dedicated to animal care were linked to the ancestral practices of marshals. Bleeding, purging and surgery of the hoof, cauterization, the use of polypharmacy were practices that were rooted in medical tradition dating back to antique times. The development of scholarly medicine and its transformation in veterinary medicine did not significantly change the nature of veterinary instruments before the end of the nineteenth century. If the first treaties that suggest diversification of surgical materials date from the first half of the nineteenth century, this development was limited to cutting-edge practices in urban and affluent backgrounds.

Au début du xviiie siècle, les instruments dédiés aux soins des animaux étaient liés aux pratiques ancestrales des maréchaux. La saignée, la purge et le lavement, la dessolure, la cautérisation, le recours à la polypharmacie étaient des pratiques qui trouvaient leur source dans une tradition médicale remontant à l’Antiquité. Le développement d’une médecine savante et sa mutation en médecine vétérinaire ne devaient pas significativement changer la nature des instruments vétérinaires avant la fin du xixe siècle. Si les premiers traités qui laissent entrevoir la diversification du matériel chirurgical datent de la première moitié du xixe siècle, cette évolution fut limitée à des pratiques d’avant-garde dans des milieux urbains et aisés.
