    Resumen La Compañía de Jesús, que descolló desde su fundación en 1540 en Portugal, y la congregación del Oratorio de San Felipe Neri, centrada en el estudio y difusión de la denominada “Filosofía Moderna”, colisionaron por obtener la primacía en la enseñanza y la actividad científica en el reino ibérico durante el siglo XVIII. La expulsión de los jesuitas en 1759, junto con la persecución que algunas figuras de los “neris” sufrieron en este contexto por parte del déspota ilustrado conocido como Marqués de Pombal, provocaron un desenlace insospechado dentro de esta disputa.

    Abstract The Society of Jesus, which excelled since its founding in 1540 in Portugal, and the Congregation of the Oratory of San Felipe Neri, focused on the study and dissemination of the so-called “Modern Philosophy”, collided to obtain the primacy in teaching and scientific activity in the Iberian kingdom during the eighteenth century. The expulsion of the Jesuits in 1759, together with the persecution that some figures of the “neris” suffered in this context from the enlightened despot known as Marquis of Pombal, led to an unsuspected outcome in this dispute.
