The controversy surrounding the existence of eusociality and caste formation in digenean rediae is reviewed from the point of view of Philip Kitcher’s philosophy of science. We examine and highlight the elements of this debate, using the concept of ‘consensus practice’ and, in particular, the seven elements of its core: the scientific language, the significant questions, the accepted statements, the explanatory schemata, the attributions of authority, the techniques and instruments, and the methodology. These elements allow us to comprehend, in a clear and precise way, the points of disagreement between the two main groups that have intervened in the debate in question.
