    The term library defines both the collection of works and the place where they are housed.

    Libraries have evolved over time, however, a common feature of all sorts is their role of supporting education and knowledge transmission. Considering the evolution of the library and its importance for humanity, the purpose of this article is to discuss the role of the library in contemporary times and the aspects that shape its typology. In this context, they are often undervalued, often with a shortage of qualified personnel and outdated collection, despite its economic and social effect.

    O vocábulo biblioteca define tanto a coleção de obras como o local em que elas estão abrigadas. As bibliotecas evoluíram com o passar do tempo, entretanto, um aspecto comum a todos os tipos é a sua função de suporte à educação e transmissão de conhecimentos. Considerando-se a evolução da biblioteca e sua importância para a humanidade, o objetivo deste artigo é discorrer sobre o papel da biblioteca na contemporaneidade e os aspectos que moldam sua tipologia. Nesse contexto seguem sendo pouco valorizadas, não raro, com falta de pessoal qualificado e acervo desatualizado, a despeito de seu efeito econômico e social.
