Panorama do abastecimento de água na Paraíba: breve análise contextual

    Sanitation is a fundamental good that is significantly reflected in the health and well-being of the individual and socio-economic development of nations. It can be said that the most essential sanitation service refers to the water supply.

    Even with the advances of modernity, the water supply still does not address the entire human species. Faced with this problem, the present study aimed to develop an overview of the water supply conditions in the state of Paraiba, in order to assess as the provision of water supply services has evolved over the years. The methodology consisted of a survey in the main data sources for the water supply in Paraiba, with the construction of graphs and tables of information about the evolution of the water supply service. Among the data sampled between 2007 and 2011, it was observed that the coverage of the network for general water supply was the most prevailed to serve Paraiba population and therefore, the state approaches the universalization of the supply by general network service. However, the advance of the provision of this service takes place slowly. The study also showed that while the urban population is mainly performed by general supply network, the rural population has the wells or springs as the main source of supply. In addition, the water supply in the state is hampered by the presence of contaminants in water sources, in which pesticides are the most responsible for such contamination.

    O saneamento básico é um bem fundamental que se reflete significativamente na saúde e no bem-estar do indivíduo e no desenvolvimento socioeconômico das nações. Pode-se afirmar que o serviço de saneamento mais essencial diz respeito ao abastecimento de água. Mesmo com os avanços da modernidade, o abastecimento de água ainda não contempla toda a espécie humana. Diante dessa problemática, no presente trabalho objetivou-se elaborar um panorama das condições do abastecimento de água no estado da Paraíba, de forma a avaliar como a prestação de serviços de abastecimento de água tem evoluído ao longo dos anos. A metodologia constou de uma pesquisa nas principais fontes de dados referentes ao abastecimento de água na Paraíba, com construção de gráficos e tabelas das informações acerca da evolução do serviço de abastecimento de água. Entre os dados amostrados entre 2007 e 2011, observou-se que a cobertura do abastecimento de água por rede geral foi a que mais atendeu a população paraibana e, por isso, o estado se aproxima da universalização do serviço de abastecimento por rede geral.

    No entanto, o avanço da oferta desse serviço se dá de forma lenta. O estudo também mostrou que enquanto a população urbana tem abastecimento realizado principalmente por rede geral, a população rural tem os poços ou nascentes como principal fonte de abastecimento. Além disso, o abastecimento de água no estado é prejudicado pela presença de contaminantes nos mananciais, sendo os agrotóxicos os maiores responsáveis.
