Resumen de Research into User-friendly Specifications for Effective Design Management: Refining and Simplifying the Process

Bill Hollins, Ken S. Hurst

  • This paper describes on-going research into the development of product design specifications (PDSs). The aim is to simplify the early stages of the design process. As part of the drive for profitable new products, customer focus and a clear definition of requirements are essential. Implicit in this is a foundation of consistency in the definition of the PDS. This paper outlines a process being developed to facilitate and guide this definition process. The conclusions of a review of current methods for PDS definition employed within a cross-section of all types of company, with a more precise study of medium-sized companies supports the need for a more formal system. A final section discusses developing the current paper-based system into a computer-based expert system.
