  • In order to improve recruitment in engineering at the undergraduate level, it is important to examine how current engineeringstudents perceive the engineering field and the factors that influence major selection. This qualitative study explores why studentschoose their engineering majors and how they perceive their field. The results show that students perceive engineering as problemsolving, improving society, innovation, and an applied science. Additionally, students major in engineering due to personalinterests, perceived aptitude, career options, and to improve society. The findings further show that students’ interests inengineering can be predicted by certain classroom environments in current and previous engineering courses.
