    Enguany es complixen huitanta anys d’una data significativa per a la cultura d’Elx. Per acord de 22 de desembre de 1939 de la Comissió Gestora de l’Ajuntament d’aleshores, després d’anys de gestions i polèmiques, la col·lecció d’antiguitats de l’arqueòleg Pere Ibarra i Ruiz (1858-1934), va ser adquirida a la seua vídua per tal de constituir un museu municipal. Aquest és el germen de l’actual Museu d’Arqueologia i Història d’Elx «Alejandro Ramos Folqués» (MAHE). I, encara hui en dia, malgrat tots els trasllats i transformacions, l’exposició museogràfica deu molt a Ibarra. Però, a pesar de ser una institució senyera de la cultura d’Elx, la història del museu és poc coneguda. Saber-ne l’origen, com es va formar, com se n’han custodiat les col·leccions, és un coneixement imprescindible per a reflexionar-ne sobre la funció, per a saber com pot servir a la comunitat, als ciutadans que el visiten, que també són artífexs del seu devenir.

    This year, hundred years will have passed since a very significant date for the culture in Elche: the agreement of the 22nd December 1939 of the managing committee of the city council. After years of management and controversy, the collection of antiques of the archaeologist Pere Ibarra i Ruiz (1858-1934), was acquired by his widow in order to build a town museum. It was the origin of the current Museum of Archaeology and History of Elx “Alejandro Ramos Folqués” (MAHE). Even today, despite all the transfers and transformations, the display and exhibition galleries own a lot to Ibarra. However, although being an outstanding institution of the city of Elx, the history of the museum is rarely known. Knowing its origins, its creation and how its collections have been safeguarded is a piece of essential knowledge to recognise its role. This article depicts how the museum serves the community and its visitors, who have an essential role in its future.
