Este ensayo investiga las referencias que se encuentran en Misión al pueblo desierto, tanto las literales como las figurativas, a lo que se ha perdido en el argumento del drama y en la historia. También se analizan las alusiones positivas a lo que se ha salvado durante la historia y la acción dramática específica. Al repasar lo que se pudo preservar, descubrimos que la referencia textual a dos cuadros del artista español Vicente Palmaroli llega a ser una invitación a los lectores a que busquen y adivinen cuáles eran los títulos de estos cuadros tan importantes que Plácido quiere salvar junto con La Anunciación del Greco. Al entender este mecanismo de inmersión y tratar de determinar los títulos, se entiende que esta acción es un paso preparatorio para los espectadores, quienes a la conclusión de la obra recibirán la instrucción de decidir por su cuenta cómo terminará este penúltimo texto de Buero.

This essay investigates the references found in Mision al pueblo desierto, both literal and figurative, to what has been lost in the action of the play and also in history. The positive allusions are also analyzed in reference to that which it was possible to save, historically and in the specific text of Buero. As we review what it was feasible to preserve, we discover that the textual reference to two painting by the Spanish Artist Vicente Palmaroli becomes an invitation for the readers to search and discover the titles of these paintings, which are so important that Plácido wants to save them along with The Annunciation of El Greco. By understanding this immersion mechanism and trying to determine the titles of the paintings, it becomes evident that this action is a preparatory step for the spectators, who, at the conclusion of the work, will receive the instruction to decide for themselves how this last play of Buero will end.
