The rational design of engineering structures as an optimization process is discussed, highlighting the desirability of identifying the influence of material selection on form at an early stage. Procedures for material selection developed at Cambridge University are examined, then extended to incorporate the manufacturing constraints of materials and the form of structural elements. A graphic presentation of data is proposed, which facilitates an integrated approach to the design of structural elements. The benefits of this approach in design, industry and education are identified.
