Resumen
In this paper the generic nature of design is discussed with the objective of clarifying some of the most fundamental aspects and it is postulated that design is characteristically a highly parallel activity. The complexity of design arises largely from the number and variety of considerations which must be addressed and their interactions. Additionally, the fact that much of the work is intellectual, and therefore invisible, adds to the difficulties encountered in the study and practice of design. To approach any design task as a purely sequential process is recognized to be ineffective and it is further argued that the concept of iteration is insufficient to explain the inherent complexities. The paper considers the nature of design from a variety of viewpoints to highlight the fact that parallel aspects are always present and suggests that approaching design as a parallel activity will lead to an improved understanding of the process.
