Classical linear fiction directs narrative to a single final aim. Earlier attempts to write the reader into the fiction were foiled by the medium. Combinatorial works either support irratio- nalism or lack any serious purpose. The responsive technology of stand-alone hypertext, offering a degree of interaction with a set of fragments to be shaped into unending experiences, seems designed to support post-modern deconstructionism. Cooperative writing on networks may yet through the live exchange of thoughts and fancies lead to a new literary humanism.
