  • Literature — a verbal representation of action as well as speech — blurs the distinction between action and speech or simplifies the pragmatics of conversation, as the minor genre of the dialogue, and the novel, show. The dialogue, an older genre, becomes increasingly ridden with narrative and taken over by the novel, whose attitudes towards conversation fall into three main categories.
