    La κατάβασις es un motivo prácticamente obligatorio en la poesía épica latina a partir de la Eneida de Virgilio. En la Alexandreis, una de las épicas latinas más importantes de la Edad Media, encontramos una versión absolutamente sui generis del descenso al inframundo. En esta κατάβασις Gautier de Châtillon readapta eficazmente el recurso manteniendo elementos que remiten al episodio virgiliano, pero, simultáneamente, introduce novedades considerables con el fin de apelar directamente a sus lectores contemporáneos. En este trabajo se propone un comentario del pasaje en cuestión (Alexandreis, 10, 6-167) que busca dilucidar hasta dónde llega la deuda contraída con el poeta romano y, al mismo tiempo, el grado de originalidad que el poeta medieval alcanza

    In Latin epic poetry, the κατάβασις is practically a compulsory motif due the Virgil’s Aeneid.

    In the Alexandreis, one of the most important Latin epic poems in the Middle Ages, there is an absolutely unique treatment of the descend towards the underworld. In this κατάβασις, Gautier de Châtillon, makes a skillfull adaptation of this literary resource while maintaining elements that pertain to Virgil’s own treatment. Of course, at the same time, he introduces conspicuous novelties in order to appeal to his contemporary readers. In this paper, we present a commentary on this episode (Alexandreis, 10, 6-167) with the purpose of elucidating how much does Châtillon owe to the Roman poet, and, at the same time, how original was the medieval poet in creating this retelling of an ancient motif
