  Several organic and inorganic materials have been used in the preparation of substrates for the production of castor bean seedlings. However, the substrate needs to be an abundant material in the region and have low cost, which is why often refer agroindustrial organic wastes. The objective this study was to evaluate the initial growth of seedlings of castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) in substrates fertilized with different sources and amounts of organic matter. The research was conducted in the open on the Site Cuité Campina Grande, PB, Brazil, in the period from June to July 2010. The experimental design was a randomized block design with four replications in a factorial 2 x 5 referring two sources of organic matter (bovine manure and chicken litter) and five levels of organic material in the substrate (0, 10, 20, 30 and 40%). The results showed that plant growth height, stem diameter, leaf area, dry matter of shoots and roots were significantly influenced by the content and source of organic matter used. The bovine manure stimulated the growth of plant height, stem diameter, dry weight of shoots and roots, and there are, however, reduced these variables from the level of 30% or so of chicken litter in the substrate. Moreover, the use of chicken litter showed higher values of leaf area.

  Diversos materiais orgânicos e inorgânicos têm sido utilizados na formulação de substratos, para produção de mudas de mamoneira. No entanto, o substrato precisa ser um material abundante na região e ter baixo custo, razão pela qual geralmente se utilizam resíduos orgânicos agroindustriais. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar o crescimento inicial de mudas de mamoneira (Ricinus communis L.) em substratos adubados com diferentes fontes e teores de matéria orgânica. A pesquisa foi realizada a céu aberto no Sítio Cuités, município de Campina Grande, PB, no período de junho a julho de 2010. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições e em esquema fatorial de 2 x 5, referente a duas fontes de matéria orgânica (esterco bovino e cama de galinha) e cinco teores de material orgânico na composição do substrato (0, 10, 20, 30 e 40%). Os resultados evidenciaram que, o crescimento das plantas em altura, diâmetro do caule, área foliar, matéria seca da parte aérea e das raízes foi significativamente influenciado pelo teor e fonte de matéria orgânica utilizada. O esterco bovino estimulou o crescimento das plantas em altura, diâmetro caulinar, matéria seca da parte aérea e das raízes. No entanto, teores acima de 30% de cama de galinha no substrato provocaram redução dessas variáveis. Os maiores valores de área foliar foram promovidos pela utilização da cama de galinha.
