The article is devoted to the problematics of possible semiotic approaches to the analysis of contemporary culture and is based on the example of the Russian border culture — an ex-liminal empire, that has generated not only its own well-known semiotic school — that of Yuri Lotman — but a less known school of border studies, striving to define the specifics of Russian liminality. The article also focuses on the problem of intercultural communication in post-imperial contexts and translation/untranslatability of various concepts and theories from one culture to another.
