The technological advances on several dating techniques during the past decade have attracted back the attention to glacier studies, since if their records are accurately dated, they represent excellent paleoclimate archives. The age of the maximum extent of glaciers from the Mediterranean region has been under debate for over a decade, with reliability of glacier chronologies focusing most of the attention. The increase of glacier chronologies is not clarifying this debate but frequently adding noise that prevents identifying a regional paleoclimate pattern. We believe that the solution of this debate is not in increasing the number of studied sites but in evaluating their accuracy (quality vs. quantity). Therefore, here we suggest five criteria in order to asses the reliability of existing glacier chronologies. A limited number of chronologies satisfy this quality control, which highlights the importance of paying more attention to chronological methods in glacier studies.
