    By studying the case of Brahma Brewing Co. we examine an aspect of foreign capital investment in Brazil at the turn of the XXth century that is still insufficiently explained by economic historiography: foreign investments in industrial projects. Particularly, the relationship between banks, foreign trade companies and industries is barely understood. By examining data from Brahma Co. we find partnership links and a flow of capital among many enterprises that took place within the German business community in Brazil. The very nature of such links, based on solid contracts, is explained by the institutional environment that prevailed during the first decades of Republic, when many important changes in commercial legislation took place.

    A partir da história da Cervejaria Brahma, exploramos um aspecto do capital estrangeiro em atividade no Brasil na virada do século XIX que não foi esclarecido suficientemente pela historiografia econômica, qual seja, os investimentos estrangeiros em projetos industriais. Particularmente mal compreendida é a relação entre bancos, empresas comercial-exportadoras e indústrias. O exame da documentação da cervejaria Brahma revelou a existência de vínculos societários e fluxos de capitais entre empresas integrantes da comunidade de negócios alemã e a cervejaria. A natureza de tais vínculos, baseados em sólidas relações contratuais, guarda relação com o ambiente institucional vigente nas primeiras décadas da República, quando importantes reformas da legislação comercial foram realizadas.
