Towards Automated Conceptual Design of Physical Dynamic Systems

    • Dynamic system design/configuration concepts and alternatives are systematically generated by two different approaches. The first is based on frequency response or immittance synthesis. The second is founded on ‘domain transformation’ and ‘alternative realization’. For system synthesis, the input-output relationships can be for systems that do not yet exist or partial systems that require extension. The synthesis technique indicates (1) how to configure a dynamic system such that its performance meets specifications or (2) if the specifications cannot be met under the initial constraints. Further, the synthesis indicates whether the design can be realized passively or must be designed actively. For the design of alternative systems, an existing system is transformed to an equivalent system from the point of view of output variables. Physical configurations and energetic domains are altered to give a designer insight into design solutions. Bond graphs serve as generalized representations of the dynamic systems considered and allow for a procedural design synthesis and alteration. Designs are synthesized by creating generalized physical systems directly from immittance or transfer function relations. The method can generate multiple system configurations meeting given specifications which may give a designer insight and flexibility in the design of novel dynamic systems. An example of the design synthesis includes the novel design of an inclination meter. Design alteration is demonstrated with a vibration isolation example.
