Manufacturing companies today are under increasing pressure to cut both cost and lead limes of not only their product cycle, but also their design/engineering cycle, without compromising the highest levels of quality and functionality which are demanded by the customer. This paper provides an insight into the author's experience in competing through design. It outlines some of the reasoning behind refining the design/engineering process, introducing new methods, changing management attitudes, organizing new product teams and implementing meaningful measures to drive continuous improvement. A selection of examples are provided which identify the sources of these benefits.
