The ways in which designers tend to index mentally-stored information are different from those in which researchers tend to do this. Traditional models of the design process which contain a single serial arrangement of stages with feedback paths do not reflect the different operational logic required at different stages of the process. A converging, two-branched model for the early, innovative part of the design process is proposed in which problem nodes are identified in one branch and potential solution nodes are identified in the other. It is at the convergence of these two branches that synthesis occurs.
