Resumen de A Methodology for Computerizing the Selection of Catalogue Components

Jeffrey Vogwell

  • Automating the selection of components from catalogues is a task which is ideally suited for computing although the methodology adopted plays a vital role. When developing a suitable strategy, however, there are many important aspects to consider. These include the handling of large amounts of technical information using databases, carrying out proving calculations at pre- and post-searching stages, and also incorporating knowledge and expert rules. Difficulties arise when establishing a suitable methodology for computing the selection procedure, however, because catalogue data formats and analysis techniques have evolved from manual procedures, whereas computer data handling methods and search strategies differ significantly. This paper describes a methodology which has been used when developing a component selection package to a commercial standard. A general approach is proposed for such systems in which the component types are largely generic in nature.
