Although emblems seem to require scholarly interpretation, the wide European diffusion of illustrated books of emblems points to the existence of a less specialised audience. This study of several anthologies uses insights from the reception theory of modern writers such as Joyce or Eco to construct a model of the reader of emblems gathered in books. Such a reader, by definition partially fore-closed from the text, derives pleasure from the appropriation of cultural signs appreciated for their ornamental value.
