La OTAN y la UEante la cumbre de Chicago. Una cooperación necesaria

    Los próximos días 20 y 21 de mayo se celebrará en Chicago la Cumbre de la OTAN, que recibirá a los presidentes de la Comisión y el Consejo Europeos, además de la Alta Representante para Asuntos Exteriores y Política de Seguridad. En una situación en la que la crisis financiera y los procesos electorales parece que ponen en tela de juicio la solidez de una política común de seguridad europea, el Tratado de Lisboa abre una ventana de oportunidad para que sus líderes salgan reforzados de una reunión que tratará fundamentalmente de confirmar el proceso de transición y delinear la líneas maestras del futuro de Afganistán; asegurar las capacidades militares necesarias para afrontar un futuro incierto; y fortalecer la cooperación a nivel global.

    The next 20 and May 21 will be held in Chicago the NATO Summit, which will meet the presidents of the Commission and the Council of the European Union, as well as the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. In a situation where the financial crisis and electoral processes appear to call into question the soundness of a common policy on European security, the Lisbon Treaty opens a window of opportunity for its leaders to reinforce their positions, in a meeting where the main themes will be: the Alliance's commitment to Afghanistan through transition and beyond; ensuring the Alliance has the capabilities it needs to defend its population and territory and to deal with the challenges of the 21st century; and strengthening NATO's network of partners across the globe.
