Tres modelos éticos de vida en la tradición filosófica: arrebato, anestesia y virtud

    Es probable que, desde tiempos muy antiguos, el ser humano se haya planteado el problema filosófico de la “buena vida” o de la areté, como le llamaron los griegos; es decir, el problema ético de lo que nos conviene (y es “bueno”) y de aquello que no nos conviene (y es “malo”). Se trata, al final de la partida, de responder a la cuestión vital de cómo hemos de conducir la vida: ¿conscientes de la condición precaria y temporal de todas las experiencias, triunfos y fracasos? ¿Anestesiados por la ignorancia, las drogas o el autoengaño? ¿O en lucha permanente –valiéndonos de las toscas herramientas que nos da una existencia corta– para hacer lo posible en este reino de lo imposible? En este artículo se examinan tres tipos de doctrinas éticas, o sea, de ideales de vida, que han aventurado algunos pensadores a lo largo de los tiempos y que me gustaría llamar respectivamente: una ética-del-arrebato, una ética-de-laresignación y una ética-de-la-virtud.

    Perhaps, since very ancient times, human beings have raised the philosophical problem of the "good life" or the areté, as the Greeks called it; that is, the ethical problem of what suits us (and is "good") and that which does not suit us (and is "bad"). This problem seeks an answer to the vital question: how we should lead our lives: aware of the ephemeral and temporary condition of all experiences, triumphs and failures? Anesthetized by ignorance, drugs or self-deception? Or in permanent struggle –using the rough tools that a short existence provides us– to do what is possible in the realm of the impossible? This article examines three types of ethical doctrines, that is, ideals of life, which some thinkers have formulated throughout time and that I would like to call respectively: an ethics-of-rapture, an ethics-ofresignation and an ethics-of-virtue.
