El pasado 5 de enero, en Etiopía, los presidentes de Sudán y Sudán del Sur alcanzaron un nuevo acuerdo de paz. Con la mediación de la Unión Africana, ambos países mostraron su conformidad con aceptar un calendario para el cumplimiento de todos los compromisos pendientes, incluida la disputa sobre la soberanía de la región fronteriza y petrolera de Abyei. Aunque la falta de confianza de la Comunidad Internacional es patente, debido al incumplimiento sistemático de muchos acuerdos anteriores, se abre ahora una nueva vía, aún impredecible, para la resolución definitiva del conflicto.
En el terreno, los enfrentamientos rebeldes contra los respectivos gobiernos, la paralización de la producción del crudo y el esfuerzo de las operaciones de Naciones Unidas para la estabilización de la región, marcan el devenir de dos naciones que, lejos de acordar un final decisivo a décadas de conflicto, siguen dibujando una senda excesivamente errática hacia la paz. Sólo la determinación y la exigencia de la Comunidad Internacional, especialmente de la Unión Africana, permitirán establecer unas relaciones bilaterales entre Sudán y Sudán del Sur, que garanticen la viabilidad nacional y la supervivencia de sus poblaciones.

On 5 January, in Ethiopia, the Presidents of Sudan and South Sudan reached a new peace agreement. With the mediation of the African Union, both countries expressed their conformity with accepting a schedule for the fulfillment of all commitments outstanding, including the dispute over the sovereignty of the border region of Abyei. Although the lack of confidence of the International Community is clear, due to the systematic failure of many previous agreements, now a new, yet unpredictable, opportunity for the final resolution of the conflict.
On the ground, the rebel groups fighting against their respective governments, the shutdown of oil production and the efforts of United Nations operations to stabilize the region, mark the future of two nations that, far from agreeing a decisive end to decades of conflict, continue drawing an overly erratic path towards peace. Only the determination and the demand of the International Community, particularly the African Union, will permit the establishment of peaceful bilateral relations between Sudan and South Sudan, which ensure the viability of both nations and the survival of their populations.
