Robert Capa: cyborg identity in a war photographer’s post-ideological narrative

    El ejercicio de la fotografía de guerra ha sido analizado históricamente desde todas las ciencias humanas. En estos estudios, generalmente, se ha privilegiado la imagen fotográfica por encima de las narrativas que estructuran la existencia de los fotógrafos de guerra. Esto sucede porque las narrativas que las imágenes técnicas proponen, pueden ser clasificadas, usando el término flusseriano, como post-ideológicas, es decir, narrativas que potencialmente pueden albergar cualquier ideología. En el presente artículo se busca identificar las narrativas emergentes que posibilitan la constitución del fotógrafo como sujeto post-ideológico, apelando para este ejercicio de identificación de narrativas, al trabajo del famoso fotógrafo Robert Capa, debido a la amplia documentación existente sobre su vida y obra. Para realizar este estudio es necesario categorizar a Robert Capa como un cyborg, teniendo en cuenta que parte de las narrativas que lo conforman provienen del aparato fotográfico y otras de su experiencia como ser humano. Se compara su experiencia, con cyborgs contemporáneos suyos como Leni Riefenstahl y con la de aquellas personas que experimentan su legado en forma de narrativa identitaria. En este análisis se identifican algunas de las narrativas que emergen en las construcciones identitarias de los fotógrafos. Estas narrativas, por el hecho de estar asociadas directamente a la relación del fotógrafo con la cámara, posibilitan estructuras post-ideológicas. Estas narrativas se convierten en complejas construcciones identitarias que trascienden al individuo y se convierten en elementos estructurales del sistema donde se produce la fotografía. Se puede concluir que la ideología asociada a esta práctica está compuesta, tanto por narrativas e ideologías humanas, como maquínicas.

    The exercise of war photography has been historically analyzed from all human sciences. In these studies, the photographic image has generally been privileged over the narratives that structure the existence of war photographers. This happens because the narratives that the technical images propose can be classified using the Flusserian term: post-ideological. Meaning that there are narratives that can potentially house any ideology. In this article we seek to identify emerging narratives that enable the constitution of photographer as a post-ideological subject. Due to the extensive documentation on his life and work, the famous photographer Robert Capa is used as a case study to identify these narratives. To carry out this study it is necessary to categorize Robert Capa as a cyborg, taking into account that part of the narratives that comprise it come from the photographic apparatus and others from his experience as a human being. His experience is compared with his contemporary cyborgs like Leni Riefenstahl and with those of those who experience his legacy in the form of an identity narrative. In this analysis, some of the narratives that emerge in the identity constructions of photographers were identified. These narratives, because they are directly associated with the photographer's relationship with the camera, enable post-ideological structures. These narratives become complex identity constructions. They transcend the individual and become structural elements of the system where photography is produced. It can be concluded that the ideology associated with this practice is composed of both, human and machine narratives, and ideologies.
