En octubre de 1936, el exilado alemán Jan Kurzke decidió ir a España como voluntario. In October, 1936 German exile Jan Kurzke decided to go to Spain as a volunteer. In Albacete, he was assigned to che XI Brigade, which consisted of our battalions and was the first International Brigade. In 1934 Kurzke had found refuge from Nazi Germany in Spain, and from the time he heard of the Nationalist uprising against the Republic in July 1936 he was eager to cake a role in che defense of the country that had given him shelter. His lover, the Mangan followed him to Spain and supported herself working in the Republican Propaganda Oflice in Valencia as she tried to locate Kurzke. After the war, the couple wrote a memoir of their "separare but connected" adventures in Spain. This lengthy, unpublished manuscript offcrs a personal, vivid, and decailed portrayal of Kurzke's experiences as a brigadista. lt also captures the atmosphere, tensions, and camraderie amongst the volunteers in training, while fighting, and in the hospitals. This paper will focus on Kurzke's perspective, his reasons for volunteering, his experiences in the war, and the difliculties he faced after leaving Spain.
