    En este artículo, se analiza la naturaleza y posición del libro de artista no solo como obra de arte, sino también como libro situado en un intersticio entre las artes y el artefacto. Se establece que desde su consolidación como género artístico, el libro de artista se ha topado con dificultades en su proceso de legitimación. Para esto, se examinan los discursos teóricos generados a partir de la creación del término libro de artista tomando en cuenta el concepto de legitimidad cultural de Pierre Bourdieu. Por otra parte, desde la noción de semiosfera de Yuri Lotman, se contrapone el análisis de legitimidad a algunos ejemplos de estructuras de libro y formas de lectura, ya sea no occidentales o no legítimas, para entender el lugar del libro de artista en el panorama general del libro

    This article analyzes the nature and place of artists’ books not only as works of art, but as books located between the arts and the book as artifact. It is first established that from the moment artists’ books were consolidated as a genre, their legitimation process has met with difficulties largely because of their condition as books. This is corroborated by examining theoretical discourses generated from the moment the term artists’ book first appeared, using Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of cultural legitimacy as a starting point. Using Yuri Lotman’s notion of the semiosphere as a guide, the aforementioned analysis of legitimacy is contrasted with some examples of both non-Western and non-legitimate book structures and ways of reading so as to understand the place of artists’ books in relation to the overall picture of the book
