Resumen de Poliomielitis y síndrome postpolio. Toda una vida superando obstáculos

  Durante años el poliovirus arrasó por diferentes partes del mundo, dejando a niños de distintas edades con síntomas que variaban desde lo inespecífico hasta las grandes parálisis musculares. Aparecía una enfermedad que precisaba ser estudiada y combatida, la poliomielitis.

  Más de cincuenta años después, podemos afirmar que esta enfermedad está casi por completo erradicada. Las personas afectadas por este virus, hoy en día, continúan luchando para conseguir superar las secuelas que la enfermedad les dejó y otras que han ido apareciendo con el paso del tiempo. Surge así, un síndrome que debe ser estudiado y combatido, el síndrome postpolio.

  A lo largo de este artículo, se pretenden mostrar las experiencias vividas por una persona junto a esta patología. Para ello, se utilizará un estudio cualitativo descriptivo, concretamente, el relato biográfico de una mujer que fue diagnosticada a los pocos meses de vida y que en la actualidad combate problemas músculo-esqueléticos que ella misma relaciona con su proceso infantil.

  For years, the poliovirus spread throughout different parts of the world, leaving children of different ages with symptoms that varied from the non specific to the major muscle paralyses. An illness that needed to be studied and fought appeared, it was polyomelitis. More than fifty years later, we can state that this desease is almost completely eradicated. The people who are affected by this virus continue fighting the effects the disease caused them and others that have been appearing over the years. It is then, when the post-polio syndrome appears, and therefore the need of researching on it.

  Throughout this article, it ́s intended to show the experiences of a person with this pathology. A qualitative descriptive study is used in order to support this theory, specifically the biographical account of a woman who was diagnosed within a few months of life and nowadays is suffering from musculoskeletal problems that she relates to the process she experienced during her childhood.
