  The article considers the thinking of realist theorist of international relations, Hans Morgenthau, on the United Nations, from 1945 to 1965, through the various editions of his most important work, Politics among Nations. In the changes that he inserted in the text in its various versions, Mor‑ genthau followed the evolution of that international organization, always cri‑ ticizing the combination of idealism and Machiavellianism that, in his opi‑ nion, limited the ability of the United Nations to fulfill its function in the field of peace and security.

  O artigo acompanha o pensamento do teórico realista das relações internacionais, Hans Morgenthau, sobre as Nações Unidas, no período de 1945 a 1965, por meio das diversas edições de sua obra mais importante, Política entre as Nações. Nas mudanças que inseriu no texto em suas várias versões, Morgenthau acompanhou a evolução daquela organização interna‑ cional, sempre criticando a combina‑ ção de idealismo e maquiavelismo que, em sua opinião, limitava a capacidade das Nações Unidas de cumprirem sua função no campo da paz e da segu‑ rança.
