    It has always seemed to me that, in the literature of the 19th century, the guillotine and syphilis were bound, as both major monsters of that imaginary. However, what is the relationship between the death device and the bacterial infection ? The article focuses on this link, present since the beginning, since it is a surgeon, Antoine Louis, who is the genuine inventor of the machine. The « surgical gesture » is of capital importance. Balzac, Hugo, Janin, Sue, Baudelaire, Flaubert, the Goncourt brothers, Zola, Huysmans, Le Rouge, Cendrars are summoned to bear witness to the link between these two powers of death.

    Il m’a toujours semblé que, dans la littérature du XIXe siècle, la guillotine et la syphilis avaient partie liée, comme les deux monstres majeurs de cet imaginaire.Mais quel rapport existe-t-il entre l’appareil de mort et l’infection bactérienne ? L’article met ce lien en évidence, présent dès l’origine, dès le moment où c’est un chirurgien, Antoine Louis, qui est le véritable inventeur de la machine. Le « geste chirurgical » est capital. Balzac, Hugo, Janin, Sue, Baudelaire, Flaubert, les Goncourt, Zola, Huysmans, Le Rouge, Cendrars sont convoqués pour témoigner du rapport entre ces deux puissances de mort.
