    Desde mediados del siglo XIX hasta la tercera década del siglo pasado, Costa Rica fue importante proveedor de especímenes de aves. Como resultado, hoy se encuentra un mínimo de 66.896 especímenes y 440 tipos de aves de Costa Rica conservados en museos de historia natural en otros países, y 14.576, incluyendo holotipos de una especie y dos subespecies, conservados en el país. Estas aves representan el patrimonio científico y cultural (aun material) de Costa Rica, por lo que es importante saber dónde se encuentran depositadas. Aquí se indican los principales museos donde hay colecciones de aves de Costa Rica, el tamaño de cada colección y el número de holotipos que las colecciones albergan. Es importante el “rescate” de este patrimonio y el primer paso es ubicar dónde se encuentran resguardadas estas colecciones y las especies representadas. Esto es especialmente necesario respecto a los holotipos porque constituyen aportes al conocimiento ornitológico básico. El propósito de este ensayo es dar ese primer paso.

    Since the mid-nineteenth century until the third decade of the last century, Costa Rica was an important provider of bird specimens. As a result, today minimally 66,896 specimens, 440 with type status, of Costa Rican birds are conserved in natural history museums in other countries, with 14,576, including holotypes of one species and two subspecies, kept in the country. These birds represent the scientific and cultural (even material) patrimony of Costa Rica, therefore it is important to indicated, the dimensions of each collection, and the number of holotypes the collections hold. It is important to “rescue” this avian patrimony. The first step is to locate where such bird collections are kept and, therefore, to know which species are represented. This is especially important regarding holotypes because they represent contributions to basic ornithological knowledge. This first step isthe purpose of this essay where they are deposited. Here the principal museums with bird collections from Costa Rica are indicated, the dimensions of each collection, and the number of holotypes the collections hold. It is important to “rescue” this avian patrimony. The first step is to locate where such bird collections are kept and, therefore, to know which species are represented. This is especially important regarding holotypes because they represent contributions to basic ornithological knowledge. This first step is the purpose of this essay.
