El Boletín Zeledonia comenzó en julio de 1997, en el marco de la planificación para la reunión de la American Birding Association y la Association of Field Ornithologists, que se llevó a cabo en San José, con la Asociación Ornitológica de Costa Rica (AOCR) como anfitriona. Carmen Hidalgo organizó el primer volumen y el segundo, organizado por Gilbert Barrantes, salió el año siguiente. A partir de 1999, Richard Garrigues asumió la dirección de la revista, pero su publicación fue irregular por problemas de tiempo, entre otros. En 2002, Roy May tomó la dirección y Janet Woodward acordó hacer la diagramación. Desde entonces, se publica dos veces al año y comienza a recibir los primeros artículos de otros países. En 2005 se incorpora la revisión científica y a partir de 2006, está indexada por OWL. En 2008, se incorpora al Catálogo LATINDEX. Hoy está indexada por otras bases de indización. En 2011, Alejandra Martínez-Salinas acepta la dirección, la revista adquiere un nuevo diseño y se consolida como revista mesoamericana. Hoy es la única revista mesoamericana de alcance regional y en idioma español, dedicada exclusivamente a la ornitología

Zeledonia began in 1997 during planning for the annual meeting of the American Birding Association and the Association of Field Ornithologists, that was held in San José, hosted by the Asociación Ornitológica de Costa Rica (AOCR). Carmen Hidalgo organized the first volume and the second, organized by Gilbert Barrantes, was published the following year. Richard Garrigues directed the journal after 1999. Production was irregular due to time and other constraints. In 2002, Roy May was named director and Janet Woodward agreed to do the diagramming. Since then the journal has been published twice a year. It also began to receive articles from other countries. In 2005 peer review was instituted, and since 2006 it is indexed by OWL. In 2008 it was incorporated into the LATINDEX Catalogue. Today it is indexed by other index services. In 2011 Alejandra Martínez-Salinas became director, the journal was redesigned, and it was consolidated as Mesoamerican. Today it is the only Mesoamerican journal dedicated exclusively to ornithology that reaches across the region and it is published in Spanish.
