    This article discusses borders between the aesthetic and the repairing in the context of breast plastic surgery. We seek to understand how these limits have been conformed in the practice of these procedures. To this end, we base our analysis on medical statements, and we present a more general discussion about these borders through a brief history of plastic surgery and the Brazilian context in relation to the specialty. Fieldwork involves observation of events and interviews with professionals in this medical field. In this context, statements are understood as practice and effect of what is concretely performed. From these, we observe a great centrality given to breasts regarding a differentiation between male and female bodies and in relation to women’s identity and self-esteem. Still, motherhood and the “reproductive function” are seen as a justification for the plastic surgery of the breasts be mostly understood as repairing. The limits between aesthetic and reconstructive surgery are constructed and sustained by a very diverse series of contingencies and according patterns of normality strongly pervaded by our conceptions of gender, sexuality, race and class that that act in a particular way in the Brazilian context.

    Este artigo discute as fronteiras entre o estético e o reparador no contexto das cirurgias plásticas das mamas. Buscamos compreender como estes limites têm se conformado na prática destes procedimentos. Para tanto, partimos de discursos médicos acerca destas intervenções e apresentamos uma discussão mais geral a respeito destas fronteiras por meio de um breve histórico das cirurgias plásticas e do contexto brasileiro em relação à especialidade. O trabalho de campo envolveu a observação de eventos e a realização de entrevistas com profissionais desta área médica, cujos discursos são tomados enquanto prática e efeito do que é performado concretamente. A partir destes enunciados, observamos uma grande centralidade conferida aos seios no que diz respeito a uma diferenciação entre corpos masculinos e femininos e em relação a uma identidade e autoestima das mulheres. Ainda, a maternidade e a “função reprodutiva” são colocadas como uma justificativa para as cirurgias plásticas dos seios serem tomadas como reparadoras em sua maioria. Os limites entre estético e reparador são construídos e sustentados por uma gama muito diversa de contingências e em consonância com padrões de normalidade fortemente perpassados por nossas concepções de gênero, sexualidade, raça e classe que ganham formas particulares de operar no contexto brasileiro.
