Los videojuegos se han convertido en un medio de consumo de masas que combina las características de medio de comunicación, obra de arte y artilugio lúdico. Sus narrativas, que hacen especial énfasis en la jugabilidad, están condicionadas por el principio de la interactividad. Muchas de estas historias se ambientan en el pasado o utilizan elementos históricos en la construcción de sus mundos digitales, produciendo simulaciones históricas que ofrecen nuevas posibilidades de interacción con el conocimiento del mundo pretérito. La presente comunicación pretende explorar este abanico de posibilidades desde un enfoque crítico, examinando sus potencialidades pero también sus desventajas.
Nowadays, computer games have become a commodity that merges the features of mass media, art piece and play. It’s narratives stress the playfulness of the game and are conditioned by the principle of interactivity. A great quantity of these stories use the past to build their own virtual worlds, creating what has been named as “historical simulations” that offer a myriad of new possibilities in our interaction with the knowledge of the past. The current talk will try to explore these possibilities from a critical approach, examining not only the potentials but also the disadvantages of the medium.
