Las luchas que tenían lugar en Ateca durante el segundo día de Pascua de Navidad y en la festividad de san Sebastián, con los combatientes introducidos en las gélidas aguas del río Manubles y que desaparecieron a finales del siglo XIX, eran conocidas porque fueron descritas por Pascual Madoz en su Diccionario-geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar, publicado en Madrid, en dieciséis volúmenes, entre los años 1845 y 1850.
Ahora con el aporte de dos artículos periodísticos, uno firmado por Juanillo el Aragonés en el año 1830 y otro por José Lostal de Tena en 1869, se completa la descripción de una fiesta de reminiscencias arcaicas que nos traslada a escenarios de otras épocas donde la fuerza, la destreza y la habilidad resultaban indispensables para la supervivencia.

The fights that took place in Ateca on the second day after Christmas day and the feast of San Sebastián with the fighters got into the ice waters of Manubles river. These fights disappeared at the end of the 19th century, they were known because they had been described by Pascual Madoz in his Diccionario-geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar, published in Madrid, in sixteen volumes, between the years 1845 and 1850.
Now with the contribution of two journalistic articles, one signed by Juanillo el Aragonés in 1830 and the other by José Lostal de Tena in 1869, the description of this archaic reminiscences feast is completed. It reminds us of scenes from other times where strength, dexterity and ability were essential for survival.
