Estructuras indicativas de extensión paralela al Arco de Gibraltar: resultados preliminares

    • Mediterranean arcs shows extremely arcuate mountain chains surrounding back arc extensional basins. In particular, the curvature of the Gibraltar Arc reaches approximately 150 km'1 in its western segment, whose structural trend is defined by the M iocene fold-and-thrust belt (South Iberian paleomargin and Flysch Trough units) and the tectonic boundary o f the Alboran Domain, i.e. the hinterland o f the Betic and R if chains. A structural revision of the westernmost part o f this Arc reveals various type o f structures which accommodated arc-parallel stretching during its building.

      These are: a) transfer zones affecting the main thrust systems; b) extensional and oblique-slip faults, some of them being active within two foreland folding episodes; and c) conjugate strike-slip faults that affect the Alboran Domain mountain front. We conclude that within the deformed foreland, a great part o f extensional fault systems may be considered as a result o f arc-parallel stretching rather than connected with back-arc extension.
