Resumen de Roman marble salvaging
The practice of re-use had significant economic implications for the Roman marble trade, yet the salvage of marble is an often overlooked aspect of the marble industry. The aim of this paper is to discuss this unexplored aspect of the Roman marble trade. It will present evidence for the salvaging of marble in Roman Italy from the Imperial to the Late Roman period, drawing on examples from both public and private contexts. It will examine, where possible, the types of marbles being targeted, as well as considering the quantities of marble being taken and the impact os such material on the marble trade. In addition, the practicalities and man-power requirements for marble salvaging will also be considered. Such evidence will add new insight to our understanding of the use of marble in the Roman period and the economic impliications of such salvaging.
